TITLE: BILINGUAL ASSISTANT

 

JOB SUMMARY: Bilingual assistants use their fluency in English and Spanish in order to assist English Language Learner students as they access the District curriculum, while also providing language support to parents and staff.  Assisting ELL families with accessing community resources as needed is a secondary function of this position.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Using Spanish to assist student in learning academic content and language in order to promote success in school.
  • Prepare ELL students to understand and participate in the teacher’s instruction by identifying ELL students’’ prior knowledge and language by previewing lessons in the students’ native language or modified English.
  • Support ELL students’ literacy development by using reading and writing strategies appropriate to the students’ level of proficiency.
  • Assist ELL students to prepare for assessments by reinforcing thinking and study skills and reviewing materials learned.
  • Facilitate cooperative work and cross-cultural understanding between ELL students and native English speakers in the classroom.
  • Provide feedback to the teacher regarding ELL students’ progress and challenges in the learning academic content and language.
  • Collaborate with teachers to plan effective interventions for ELL students.
  • Translate and interpret for school personnel, as needed, to include teachers, support staff, and administrative staff.
  • Provide language support for various school activities such as enrollment, family nights, IEP meetings, etc.

 

EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrate fluency in English and Spanish (reading, writing, speaking and listening)
  • Associate’s Degree preferred, but not required
  • Experience working in an organized setting with children whose primary language is not English is preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Will be required to regularly stand, sit, and walk for extended periods.
  • Must regularly lift/move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift/move objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Flexible schedule, as needed, to accommodate before and after school meetings and activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents, staff members, and students from all cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Collaborate with ELL Coordinator, building administrator, and staff members to provide services and support to ALL students. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 1.03 ratio (183 days, 7 hours per day)

STATUS:  Non-Exempt Support Personnel
